Hi everyone.  My name is Blue, but my foster mom calls me Bluebird.  I'm a one-year-old, 5 pound female chihuahua.  I am heartworm negative and will be spayed as well as up to date on all vaccinations before adoption.  You may not have noticed but I'm nearly completely hairless.  Not a fan of shedding?  Perfect, I'm your girl!  I am a blue chihuahua and unfortunately alopecia is common with that color in chihuahuas.  It does not require any special treatment, just less hair!  

 

I'm a tiny nervous fragile girl, much like the bird my foster mom calls me.  I will need a home that has had experience with chihuahuas or nervous dogs (foster mom says this is a requirement).  I was originally a stray and spent several days at the shelter.  It was such a scary experience for me.  My foster mom gave me a safe place and time to adjust before she even attempted petting me.  By day two, I was wandering the house and asking for pets but I would still growl and run.  By day three, she was able to pet and hold me.  By day four, she was getting kisses and tail wags.  By day five, we were taking trips around town!  I warm up fast if you are willing to go slowly.  Please don't even expect to pet or get near me for the first few days. 

 

I am such a love, but new people can be a little scary for me!  Once I know you're my friend, I will love you so much.  My foster mom can help give you tips on how to help me acclimate and help me become your best friend. Once I trust you, I will be your most loyal companion and cuddle buddy!

 

Some of my favorite activities are snuggling on the couch (I'm currently snuggled up next to my foster mom as she helps me write this!), snuggling on my foster mom's lap (or legs, or feet) while she works, being told I'm beautiful (don't we all love that), going for car rides and being carried around, dancing on my two back legs so I can be picked up, and watching birds out the window.  I don't know how to walk on a leash yet and I really don't care for it so far.  My foster mom got a harness for me though, and we are working on my walking skills.  I would prefer a home that has a fenced yard so I can wander around or someone that doesn't mind carrying me from place to place like the royal little Bluebird that I am.  I am a velco dog and never let my foster mom get out of my sight!

 

I've also learned I really love music.  My foster mom plays music for me when she's gone so I have something to listen to.  I love the classics and country!  I was so excited when I heard a song about me!  My favorite lyric from the song... "I'll keep a light on in my soul, keep a bluebird in my heart."  Such a good song!

 

I don't bark, I do great in a crate, and I am trained to use pee pads.  I haven't had a single accident in the house with my foster mom!  I am great with dogs of all sizes and enjoy their company.  I would need dogs that are respectful due to my tiny size.  It's unknown how I would be with cats, but I don't seem very reactive to animals so I would probably be fine.  It can be tested before adoption if needed.  I would do best in a home without children due to my nervous nature and small size.  I am definitely a one person dog or one adult family dog.  I might socialize more with time but at this moment, I cannot be pet by strangers or play with visiting children.  I will love my people but the stranger danger is strong with me!

Notes from foster:  Blue is an absolute LOVE but it will take you at least a week if not a little longer to earn her trust.  Yes, she's adorable but she will need patience and work on your end.  This means no touching for a day or two.  Sitting outside her kennel and speaking to her.  Letting her set her boundaries.  Also, no children in the home or visiting unless you can ensure she has a safe place to be left alone while they are visiting. She's too fearful and nervous for children unfortunately.  Little Blue has been through a lot of change and movement so she's quite fearful of new situations.  She will NOT be a lap dog or even touchable within the first few days but after a week or so, she will be your best friend.    Please consider applying for another dog if you are not comfortable giving her at least a week to adjust to you.  We have plenty of small friendly dogs that we could set you up with instead.
